MicProbe / Microphone guides

What sounds wrong with your microphone?

Start with the symptom you hear. Each guide helps you separate a problem in the recording from playback or a real call, then choose one thing to check next.

Low or unclear voice

  • My microphone is too quiet — people can barely hear you, even though the microphone works.
  • My microphone sounds muffled — your voice sounds covered, distant or underwater.

Noise or missing words

  • My microphone makes static, buzzing or crackling sounds — separate steady noise from distortion on louder words.
  • My microphone keeps cutting out — work out whether words disappear locally, in an app's check or only in a live call.

Sound changes with the connection or app

  • My Bluetooth headset sounds bad when the microphone is on — compare the recording with the sound you hear through the headset.
  • My recording sounds good, but calls sound bad — check the actual app and the rest of the call path.

Nothing is being recorded?

Check the microphone's mute control, the selected input and microphone permission in both your operating system and browser. On Windows, follow Microsoft's microphone troubleshooting guide. A sound-quality test needs an input it can record.

Check your own recording

MicProbe guides you through a microphone recording, lets you listen back and provides the checks available for that recording. Choose the app you use; its microphone settings are approximated locally. The test does not inspect a real call or measure what another person hears.

Choose a microphone test

How MicProbe tests your microphone explains the scope and limits. These guides are written by MicProbe and link to device and app guidance where relevant.
